Coastal Engineering was established in 1979 to offer to the oil and power industry oil spill clean-up expertise, training, and equipment. Coastal has acted in a supervisory capacity in most of the major oil spill incidents on the Eastern Seaboard and has been involved in over 1000 spills total. We were instrumental in the design and formation of the Clean Caribbean Oil Spill Cooperative and the Clean Nigerian Oil Spill Cooperative. We have conducted oil spill training courses, major oil spill drills and environmental audits for oil company marketing, shipping, refining and producing personnel in the United States and overseas (i.e. United Kingdom, Nigeria, Singapore, Indonesia, Canada, Ecuador, Dominican Republic, Bahamas, Panama, Colombia, Trinidad, Greece, Honduras, Guatemala, Guam and Saipan).
Three years ago I spilt the Company into two divisions. The Oil Division handles all the environmental equipment and services and the Rail Division handles model railroad equipment and supplies.
As a youngster my first train set was American Flyer S scale tinplate. I went from there to HO. In the early 50's we moved from a house in Westchester County New York to a New York City apartment. My only chance to have a model railroad was a layout that could slide under my bed so I went to TT. I continued in TT until the early 1970's when I sold all my equipment and went to HO. Somehow most of my locos and cars ended up in Germany with Wilfred Knipping's group. So when I decided to get back into TT I had to start all over again.
To me the size is just right. My eyes can not handle N scale and yet I can get so much more railroad with TT than I can in HO. I also like the idea of TT being unique. When you tell a model railroader that you are in TT it usually takes them back a little. There is prestige in working in a scale that requires the modeler to use his or her ingenuity.
I started manufacturing TT equipment after I contacted the NMRA to ascertain the availability of a NMRA gauge in TT. They told me that there was not enough demand for a TT NMRA gauge but they did give me permission to manufacture one. My first product was the TT NMRA type gauge that is laser cut out of stainless steel. I then got together with Rod Guthrie of Railway Design and came up with the Bettendorf trucks. The only way for me to finance this TT venture was through my Company, so I established the Rail Division of Coastal Engineering & Research Co., Inc.
Most of the TT scale Model Railroad products that we carry are made by us. Some have been contracted out to other manufacturers, such as our freight trucks.
However, we also carry other Model Railroad products that have been obtained from a well known source. Some of the quantities of these items are limited because they are no longer being produced.
